“T for Terroir, a tattooed landscape, an imprint. Tilly Niel’s handmade, hand-dyed ecotextiles speak of the seasons. Capturing long walks through the woods in winter, the rich smell of the earth in autumn and the joy of the first buds bursting into spring, her tablecloths, napkins, face cloths and furoshiki evoke treasured memories in nature; a shade on a hand, the heat of the sun, the ripple of breeze through tall grass. To be more precise, they whisper the poetry, colours, sounds and fragrances of Aubrac in Northern Aveyron, France. Brambles, beech and passion flower petals, sunflower and saffrons’ Indian summer hues- her ever-changing botanical colour palette invites experimentation and is always sustainable, playful and tasteful.
Nature does not necessarily rhyme with rustic for Tilly. She ecoprints on the finest vintage linens and cotton, marrying her screenprints with elegant vintage tableware on all occasions. Formal family gatherings, holidays picnics and slow Sunday breakfasts all bear her personal stamp of simple, seasonal refinement.
Till’s long been a favourite of mine. Like everyone I choose to champion on Plumes and Feathers, she’s genuinly passionate about her craft; she works slowly and quietly away from the bells and whistles of social media, and I admire that.
